In 1957 (through the efforts of the Randolph Commission, the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council and other civic and business groups), the Illinois legislature established the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission--known later by its shortened name as the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, or NIPC. County planning and development department begun in 1958. Kane County had been paying a yearly fee to be included in the Chicago Planning Commission's plans, when the County Board of Supervisors set up a committee to develop an overall county plan in 1957.
